Lieutenant Colonel Michael P. Wylie was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of South Carolina in 1991.  He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in May 1991.  He completed The Basic School in November 1991 and the Infantry Officer Course in February 1992. 

Lieutenant Colonel Wylie’s first duty assignment was as 2nd Platoon Commander, Company L, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines from March 1992 until September 1993.  During this assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Wylie participated in a CAX, attended II MEF SOTG Assault Climber Course and deployed to the Mediterranean with BLT 3/8, 26th MEU aboard the USS Ponce.  He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 1 May 1993.  In October 1993, Lieutenant Colonel Wylie became the Executive Officer, Company I, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, serving in that billet until May 1994.

In May 1994, Lieutenant Colonel Wylie transferred to Marine Corps Recruiting Station Orange, Irvine, California.  Lieutenant Colonel Wylie served as the Recruiting Station Operations Officer from May 1994 until July 1996.  He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 September 1995.  He subsequently served as the Recruiting Station Executive Officer from July 1996 until July 1997.  Upon completion of his tour of recruiting duty, Lieutenant Colonel Wylie attended the Amphibious Warfare School Resident Course from August 1997 until May 1998.

Lieutenant Colonel Wylie served as Commanding Officer, Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines from May 1998 through May 2000.  During this time he participated in a CAX as the commander of Team Mech, took part in Exercise Urban Warrior and deployed from June 1999 through January 2000 to the West Pacific with BLT 1/5, 31st MEU as the mechanized company commander. 

In May 2000, Lieutenant Colonel Wylie assumed the duties of Assistant for Enlisted Recruiting, 12th Marine Corps District, MCRD San Diego.  Lieutenant Colonel Wylie completed the Command and Staff College Non-resident Course in June 2002.  He then served as a Marine Corps University adjunct faculty member, instructing Phase II of the Amphibious Warfare School Non-Resident Course aboard MCRD San Diego for Academic Year 2002-03  

Lieutenant Colonel Wylie assumed the billet of Executive Officer, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California in 29 July 2003.  While in this billet he deployed with his battalion to Ar Ramadi, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II from February 2004 to September 2004.  Lieutenant Colonel Wylie served as the Executive Officer of Battalion Landing Team 2/4 from March 2005 to November 2005 when his command was deployed to the West Pacific as the Ground Combat Element of the 31st MEU.  During the deployment he additionally served as the commander of the 31st MEU’s Maritime Special Purpose Force.

Lieutenant Colonel Wylie next served as an Action Officer and Branch Chief in the Contingency Planning Branch, Future Operations Division, U. S. Pacific Command J-3 Operations Directorate from July 2006 to July 2009 at Camp Smith, Hawaii.  He then served as an Action Officer and Marine liaison officer to JUSMAG Manila, Philippines while on the staff of Commander, Marines Forces Pacific from July 2009 to April 2010. 

Lieutenant Colonel Wylie became the, Executive Officer, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, on 12 April 2010 and continued to serve in that billet until he assumed command of the MEU on 12 July 2012.  While the with the MEU he deployed to the USPACOM and USCENTCOM AORs on WESTPAC 11-02. 
    
Lieutenant Colonel Wylie’s personal awards include the Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award.
