First Sgt. Michael P. Edwards, right, accepts a letter of appreciation here May 15 after he and other Marines serving with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit shoveled dirt during a volunteer project at an orphanage. Edwards hails from Rome, N.Y., and serves as first sergeant for Battery K, Battalion Landing Team 3/1. The landing team serves as the ground combat element for the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which embarked the ship, as well as USS Makin Island and USS New Orleans in San Diego Nov. 14, beginning a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific, Horn of Africa and Middle East regions.
