Sgt. Lucas E. Wallek stands aboard the amphibious assault ship Makin Island off Southern California's coast Sept 7. The machine-gun squad leader is an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran currently serving with Company I, Battalion Landing Team 3/1. The battalion serves as the ground combat element for the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The unit is underway for a second exercise since becoming a complete Marine-air ground task force in May. The unit is scheduled to deploy this fall. Wallek, 27, is from Alice, Texas.
