The amphibious assault ship Makin Island sails off Southern California’s coast during a training mission Aug. 18 in which Navy and Marine Corps helicopters provided observation. Makin Island and the amphibious transport dock New Orleans simulated transiting a natural passageway connecting two large bodies of water. Embarked aboard the ships are the Marines, sailors, aircraft and equipment of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, scheduled to deploy this fall.
