Lance Cpl. Joshua T. Long, a rifleman serving with Company I, Battalion Landing Team 3/1, provides security during a heliborne training raid here Aug. 17. Helicopters flew the company of Marines and sailors from USS Makin Island off Southern California’s coast to the objective site more than 200 miles away. The rifle company is one of three in 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines. Reinforced, the battalion serves as the ground combat element for the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, scheduled to deploy this fall to the Western Pacific and Middle East regions. Long is from Thurmont, Md.
