Daniel Hernandez, left, checks an advanced combat helmet worn by 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit logistics officer Maj. Siebrand H. Niewenhous IV during a fitting session at Camp Del Mar here July 15. Hernandez is an instructor with a West Coast infantry combat equipment training team from Marine Corps Systems Command. The unit is the first Marine air-ground task force designated to receive the new combat helmet, which is a lighter version of its predecessor and provides better acoustics and visibility, said Robert Madrid, who represents a I Marine Expeditionary Force program that oversees new equipment. Madrid did not specify when the unit would be receiving the helmets, but said it would deploy with them. The unit is scheduled to deploy later this year.
