Pfc. Eric J. Meek opens a helium tank to inflate a balloon tethered to a communications relay system during a training exercise at Camp Del Mar here July 14. The balloon floats up to 80,000 feet, extending the communication coverage to an area of 600 miles in diameter regardless of terrain, said Jerry Quenneville, vice president for business development at Space Data, a wireless communications corporation. Meek, 23, a radio operator with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit is from Lake Orion, Mich.
