Iraqi men exit their vehicle before Lance Cpl. Eric C. Johnson, a 20-year-old Marine from Hendersonville, Tenn., begins to inspect the men?s car as part of heightened security measures on the eve of Iraq?s parliamentary elections Jan. 29, 2005 in Najaf, Iraq. Mounted in Humvees and armed with machine guns, missiles and rifles, Marines from Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) have spent the past several days sweeping the city?s streets in search of potential enemy activity. Although the holy city of more than 500,000 has been relatively peaceful since the Marines defeated insurgents here in August, the Marines aren?t taking any chances for a possible attack on election day. While Iraqi Security Forces are manning all of the city?s polling centers and check points, the Marines are but a stone?s throw away from their Iraqi counterparts if called upon by the local government to intervene and quell any situation
