An M1-A1 Abrams tank is staged in preparation for the culminating event during the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Combined Arms Exercise 2016 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., 16 June. Timed exposures of the night sky produce an effect referred to as ‘star trails’; the movement of the earth makes the exposure of the stars like that of a moving object, producing lines or circles of light. The blurred red lighting in the photograph is the same effect, but that of Marines on fire watch, walking by the tank with a red-lensed flashlight. Combined arms is the full integration of available fire power such as close-air support, indirect fire by mortars or artillery, and ground troops’ weapons systems in such a way that to counteract one, the enemy must become vulnerable to another; it poses the enemy with a dilemma – a no-win situation.
