Marines with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and sailors with the USS Makin Island (LHD 8) form up on the flight deck of the USS Makin Island just before the memorial ceremony for Cpl. Jordan Spears Oct. 8. Cpl. Spears was lost at sea Oct. 1 during flight operations off the Makin Island. The 11th MEU is a forward-deployed, flexible sea-based Marine Air-Ground Task Force embarked with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
