Col. Mathew Trollinger, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s commanding officer, cuts the ceremonial first slice of the Marine Corps birthday cake as part of the 11th MEU’s Marine Corps Ball ceremony here Nov. 9. Every year, Marines all around the world host a Marine Corps Ball celebrating the day the Marine Corps was first established. During the ceremony, Trollinger cut the first slice of cake with a sword to convey and maintain the Marine Corps’ warrior stature.
