ABOARD THE U.S.S. PELELIU -- As Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit stood in formation in the hangar bay Col. J.W. Bullard cut a ceremonial cake in honor of the Marine Corps' 230th Birthday aboard the U.S.S. Peleliu Nov. 9.
Bullard, commanding officer of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Pendleton, Calif., handed the first piece to the Guest of Honor, Brig. Gen. Carl B. Jensen, commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3.
The second piece went to the oldest Marine present, Master Sgt. Richard Siegfried, maintenance control chief, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego. Siegfried handed the third piece to the youngest Marine present Lance Cpl. Nina Crust, radio operator, MEU Service Support Group 11, Camp Pendleton.
The passing of the piece of cake from the oldest to the youngest Marine symbolizes the passing of knowledge, experience and traditions from one generation of Marines to the next.
The Marines and sailors commemorated a time-honored tradition that has stood since the founding of the Corps on Nov. 10, 1775 at Tunn Tavern, Philadelphia, PA.
The next day, Marines were served steak and lobster by officers and staff noncommissioned officers as part of the celebration as well.
The 11th MEU's Command Element, MSSG-11, HMM-166 (Reinforced) and Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment are onboard conducting training in preparation for their upcoming deployment this winter.
