ABOARD THE USS PELELIU -- Lt. Gen. John F. Sattler, commander, U.S. Marine Forces Central Command and commanding general of the I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif., paid a visit to the Marines and sailors of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Peleliu to highlight the importance of their training Nov. 15.
The Marines and sailors of MEU Service Support Group 11, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, both from Camp Pendleton, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, along with Amphibious Squadron 3 and Expeditionary Strike Group 3, are conducting training exercises as part of their pre-deployment training aboard the Peleliu and at Camp Pendleton in preparation for their upcoming deployment early next year.
Sattler, accompanied by Brig. Gen. Carl B. Jensen, commander, ESG-3, and Command Master Chief (FMF) Raphael Sanchez, I MEF, arrived on a CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter.
11th MEU Commanding Officer Col. J.W. Bullard and other Marines and sailors joined Sattler for a pizza, pasta and salad lunch on the ship's mess deck.
"I thought it was pretty cool that General Sattler ate at the lower mess deck with us and ate the same food we did," said Lance Cpl. Justin S. Morris, radio technician, Headquarters & Services Company, BLT 1/4, from Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Sattler also took the time to thank the Marines and sailors for the great job they are doing and asked some Marines about their individual military occupational specialties.
"It was very considerate that he came out to meet us and that he was interested in our jobs and the training we are doing," said Lance Cpl. Marisol Horta, administration clerk, MSSG-11, from San Fernando, Calif.
Before he departed on a Sea Knight, Sattler was given a tour of the amphibious ship by Jensen, Bullard, Commodore P.W.D. Morford, commander, COMPHIBRON-3, the Peleliu's Commander Capt. W. S. Personius and the ship's Executive Officer Cmdr. M. E. Cedrun.
