Navy Lt. Ryan Bareng and others assemble a newly painted bed frame while volunteering at Sarakul Stadium March 6. Service members aboard USS Rushmore cleaned and painted for the Phuket Athletic Club, a nationally competing track-and-field team. The volunteers – service members with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group – spent the day fixing bent bed frames, cleaning rooms and painting beds and lockers. The stadium offers boys an alternative to growing up in Phuket neighborhoods where drugs and crime affect many young people. Bareng is the chaplain for Battalion Landing Team 2/4, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s ground combat element.
