AT SEA, Pacific Ocean (September 12, 2016) – A Marine with Maritime Raid Force, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, climbs aboard a rigid-hulled inflatable boat following a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure mission executed off the coast of San Clemente Island, Calif., as part of the 11th MEU’s Certification Exercise, Sept. 13, 2016. VBSS missions can be conducted if a ship is suspected smuggling illicit cargo. Once a vessel has been cleared of an enemy threat and searched for weapons and high-value individuals, the ship will then be turned over to host-nation security forces.
