Broken and graffitied lockers at Sarakul Stadium hold track medals and the few earthly possessions of teen boys living here. Service members aboard USS Rushmore volunteered March 6 to clean and paint for the Phuket Athletic Club, a nationally competing track-and-field team. The volunteers – service members with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group – spent the day fixing bent bed frames, cleaning rooms and painting beds and lockers. The stadium offers boys an alternative to growing up in Phuket neighborhoods where drugs and crime affect many young people.
